Wood Carving for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know Before Starting

Wood carving — or whittling — is one of those hobbies that seem difficult from the outside but that, with the right tools and a bit of patience, anyone can learn. You don’t need a workshop, machinery, or years of practice. Just a good knife, soft wood, and the desire to start.

Why is wood carving gaining popularity?

In a world of screens and constant notifications, wood carving offers something few hobbies do: total presence. When carving, people completely disconnect. It’s meditative, physical, and produces something tangible you can hold in your hand.

In recent years, it has exploded in YouTube and Reddit communities under the name whittling, with millions of people learning from scratch.

What wood to use to start

The choice of wood changes everything. For beginners, basswood is the standard option: it’s soft, uniform, knot-free, and responds well to the knife. Avoid hard woods like oak or walnut until you have more experience.

Our Wood Carving Kit includes ready-to-use basswood blocks.

Basic tools

  • Chip knife: for straight and angled cuts. The most versatile.
  • Detail knife: for fine lines and finishing touches.
  • Hook knife: for hollowing out the inside of spoons or bowls.
  • Cut-resistant gloves: essential. Non-negotiable.
  • Leather strop + polishing compound: to keep the edge sharp.

Your first project: a simple spoon

The wooden spoon is the classic beginner project. It’s functional, has simple curves, and teaches you fundamental techniques.

Basic steps:

  1. Draw the spoon’s outline on the wood block with a pencil.
  2. Using the chip knife, start removing wood following the contour. Always carve away from yourself.
  3. For the bowl, use the hook knife with slow circular motions.
  4. Smooth with long, gentle strokes for the final finish.
  5. Sand if necessary with fine sandpaper.
  6. Apply olive oil or beeswax to protect the wood.

Fundamental safety rules

  • Always carve away from your body
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves on the hand holding the wood
  • Keep tools sharp — a dull edge requires more force and is more dangerous
  • Work on a stable surface
